Pandarella tells the almost-but-not-quite familiar tale of the down-and-out girl who dreams of going to the big party and impressing the man of her dreams. Written in simple Chinese, the book is suitable for learners in the first year, and focuses on repetition of the most frequent words and characters in the language. The entire story contains just 114 unique words (with "he" and "his" considered to be two words, for example) and runs over 700 words in length. Each page is illustrated, and the text is in full color, with spaces between words, to assist emergent readers of Chinese. A full glossary is included at the end of the story to ensure that the text is comprehensible to all readers.

NICE IDEA - VERY POORLY EXECUTED. This book uses colored Chinese characters (Hanzi) to signify tones. That's Great. However, the author uses his own non-standard colors... That's Not Smart.
This book is totally useless to anyone who would like to use it alongside any other books or software using the de facto tone colors as defined by Nathan Dummitt (See his book ISBN 978-0781812047).
The (Dummitt) de facto tone colors are
1. RED (High Alert) - HIGH
2. ORANGE (Rising Sun) - GOING UP
3. GREEN (Green Valley) - GOES DOWN & UP
4. BLUE (Deep Blue Sea) - GOES DOWN
5. BLACK - Neutral. (Gray is okay too).
Colors are very helpful for visualizing and memorizing the tones of each character. Most Chinese learning websites and apps that use tone colors are using Dummitt's colors.
But that's not the only serious problem with this book. Additionally, the author absolutely butchers Pinyin Firstly, he colorizes Pinyin... and THEN he CapITalizeS various letters in each "PǐNyIn wóRd". Why? Because apparently Pinyin's regular (standard) tone marks are not sufficient to convey tones on their own. (wǒw! )
Over the years, I've purchased many, many Chinese language study books but these are by far the worst two books that I've ever seen. They look absolutely terrible and VERY CONFUSING.
Both of these "PandaRiffic" books were sent back for a full refund.
I am taking a couple of beginners Chinese lessons and this book has been my favorite. Unfortunately, the QR scan code does not work so I have not been unable to listen to the recordings. Other than that, the color-coded characters that correspond to the pinyin tones along with the glossary on the back of the book make this a wonderful tool to learn Chinese
I am concerned with the usage of "不是人“ which in colloquial Chinese can easily be considered derogatory and not a compliment. It may be better to consider saying "不是个人”. These nuances are important to be attentive to when teaching/learning a language. I would never teach this expression to my students!
I have been using this book a lot since I have a lot of beginning learners. They all love this book esp this color-coded method which helped a lot with pronunciation. This is also an interesting book! There are a lot of repetition in that book and learners would acquire a lot of useful words without noticing that! Also you can scan the QR code listening to the audio version! The best book for beginners!
