Loved this book. You get a little bit of everything, humor and sadness, love and loss. "The Yellow Shovel" was my favorite, doing what great storytelling does forcing us to look inward at ourselves by looking through a lens that becomes less and less harder to see through the older we get. A book that is truly worth your time. Well done.
I've always loved Bonne's stories and to have a collection of them in one book is really a treat -- she has a way of presenting serious issues in people's lives with a very light touch - nothing is really tragic, yet very poignant and thought provoking. It amazes me how she can relate experiences of kids and teenagers who are trying to figure themselves out, and then jump to stories about seniors or retired couples who are reflecting on how they got to where they ended up. I've had several different stories moving in and out of my thoughts since finishing Boyfriends. Mo

Bonnie West is the best! Her pacing is superb, her plots ingenious, and her writing clear and buoyant. She's also just twisted enough to keep it interesting.

If you like short stories, you'll love this book. And if you think you don't like short stories, this book might change your mind. The people who inhabit these stories will stick with you. Some of the stories are light and others are more serious, but they all speak truth. I highly recommend this book.
I’ve had the good fortune to read Bonnie West’s stories over the past few years, pieces like “Song Loon” which now appear in this collection. It’s a pleasure to see a full body of 19 stories get published. The ones she’s selected for inclusion are well-executed, and her writing is honest, direct, and often quite funny. There’s a comfort in the work, but that comfort, and the harmony and connections characters find, can be deceiving. The book, like life, is dotted with departures, reflection, and doubt. They are, as all good collections of stories tend to be, very human stories. And in that, they are uplifting and gratifying.
