Good read. This was my 4th Hetta Coffey adventure. Story line was interesting but I was able to put down, whereas the previous books kept me awake until finished.
Was a little surprised at the fast ending when normally Jinx ties up the loose ends. Still would recommend for a fun read. Definitely written by a knowledgeable sea woman. I am ready for number five. Then will venture into author's other novels. Thanks for great reads.
#4 in the Hetta series and it doesn't let you down. A little suspense, a little lust (in the mind), a little corruption and a lot of fun! Jinx never disappoints. Highly recommend but best if you start with "Just Add Water", #1 in the series.
Some books and some readers should not cross paths because the results can be detrimental to one or both. In the case of Just Deserts by Jinx Schwartz, I think the book will suffer because of three major distractions. Let be honest and point out that this book all the qualities for a good read except for these distractions.
First, I feel that the Prologue set the story up so that the average reader will spot the climax long before they reach the end. I spotted the climax on page 136 and had 191 paged to go to reach the predicted climax.
Secondly, the author made a serious historical mistake on page 310 when she stated that Naco AZ was “… the town the only place on the continental United State to suffer an aerial bombing.” Maybe it was the first however, between November, 1944 and April, 1945, 1000 of the 9000 balloon bombs reached the USA. The only enemy-inflicted casualties on the U.S .soil happened in Oregon. One also landed near where I currently live.
Finally, I felt that I grew tired of dealing with Hetta’s addictions. Could Hetta be the author's alter-ego.
To be fair I decided to give this book a two star review; at least from my perspective.
Living on a boat can be full of adventure. For Hetta Coffey in JUST DESERTS, her boat life is sidelined when blisters are discovered on the bottom of her small yacht. She thoroughly enjoys living this way but unfortunately, she has to occasionally work in order to pay the bills and especially when her boat requires expensive and possibly extensive repairs.
Fortunately being a well-qualified civil engineer, Hetta only has to make one phone call to be assigned a job that pays well close to where she is currently located. She is assigned a job in Mexico for a mining company that currently is experiencing labor/union issues and is in desperate need of being updated, especially in the area of safety standards.
Hetta discovered that being located in northern Mexico is problematic and decides to search for a home on the other side of the border in Arizona. She temporarily rents a luxury house and enjoys her time alone in this home until she is visited by a local coyote and numerous friends. Between being a host for her friends, and the local problems of smuggling people, drugs, materials for a dirty bomb, and terrorists, life is far from boring.
JUST DESERTS is the fourth novel in this Hetta Coffey series by author, Jinx Schwarz. She also wrote an outstanding young adult novel, LAND OF MOUNTAINS, which was based on her own life growing up in Haiti.
JUST DESERTS is a little slow at the beginning. Hetta experienced too many problems to be the spunky character with a sense of humor. It is difficult in any series to continually develop the characters without reviewing too much for loyal readers. This particular novel did have Hetta asking many questions about the mining company and the area with no easy answer. The coyote character was reassuring and added humanity regarding this part of the country.
For anyone who has not read any of Jinx Schwartz novels, you are missing a masterful storyteller who tells a memorable and enjoyable tale.
Absolutely the poorest edit I have ever seen ! It was if two different editions had been shuffled together - each in a different font. You would read a couple of pages in font 1, turn the page and be on a different page in font 2. After struggling through this page you would turn the page and be back in font 1 but about the middle of the page you had just left. It was like this 2-1-2-1-2-1 ... until I finally tossed in the towel and quit.
